Adopt, Don't Shop
So you’re thinking about the possibility of adding another member to your family. It just so happens that this member with be cute, cuddly and fury and without a doubt, your new best friend. You have prepared yourself to take on this great responsibility but you still have so many unanswered questions. No need to worry, this article will guide you along the way. A common question often asked is should I adopt from a shelter or purchase from a breeder? Whenever possible, ADOPT, ADOPT, ADOPT!
We don’t want to call breeders the “bad guy”, however, it is definitely not the best route to take if you’re looking at the bigger picture. Some breeders use a female canine to produce as many offspring as she can, until she can no longer. After the female canine can no longer be of use to the breeder, she is often placed in a shelter or abandoned and replaced by another, and the cycle will continue. The puppies are sold to stores, online, or privately for a higher price. When you adopt at a shelter, you are helping to reduce the number of unwanted dogs. You’re also helping to put an end to “puppy mills”. If you don’t know why puppy mills are bad, here are several reasons. Puppy mills are factory-like settings that are regarded as a cash crop commodity that operate under extreme poor conditions. The dogs used to breed live in tight confinement and usually never get to experience the joy of stepping outside. The care is often at a minimum in regards to grooming, walk, play, and nutrition. There have been an abundance of negative reports of puppies having communicable diseases which result to heartache and expanse for purchasers. Usually purchasers are misguided and led to believe that they are purchasing a healthy pet. It is common that the expanse becomes far too great to bear, so the puppies are abandoned by being placed into shelters, which causes an increase to the number of unwanted pets. Don’t be fooled into the slick and creative online catalogs of pets for sale. This is a luring trick to tug at the heartstrings of the consumer, but behind the scenes, it is an operation that is more often than not cruel and heartless. So remember, whenever possible “Adopt, Don’t Shop”.
When adopting from a shelter, there is a greater majority of older pets in comparison to purchasing from a breeder. By adopting an older pet, there is a higher probability that they will be housebroken; which means that the pet can potty outside and not on your fancy carpet or furniture. “Adopt, Don’t Shop”.
Costs will be significantly lower if you adopt a pet from a shelter. Most shelters have already vaccinated their dogs and cats and even spayed or neutered them which will save you on veterinary bills. Believe me, those veterinary bills can become extremely high. “Adopt, Don’t Shop”.
The most important reason to adopt from a shelter instead of purchasing from a breeder is because you are saving a life. Whenever you open up your home and heart to a new pet, you are helping reduce the number of animals that are put to sleep, you create space for new animals to be placed and be taken care of at the shelter, and you are helping in putting “puppy mills” out of business. “Adopt, Don’t Shop”.
Maybe you can’t save the world, but by adopting, you are saving a pet’s entire world and in return a pet will give you unconditional love and will become your entire world. A pet will be your loyal and fun companion that will also become a source of your happiness, and touch your heart like you never knew possible. “Adopt, Don’t Shop”.
